About

Founded in 1972, the Atons of Minneapolis are one of the United States’ oldest continuously active leather/Levi social fraternities. We are a fraternal organization open to all individuals who support our values, regardless of gender or orientation. Dedicated to building community and promoting public understanding of leather and kink culture, we foster fraternity, fellowship, and solidarity through social events, public outreach, and collaboration with like-minded organizations. We celebrate the unity and diversity of the leather community and work to encourage local, national, and international fellowship.

History of Organization

The story of the Atons of Minneapolis begins in 1972, when a group of gay men in the Twin Cities came together to form a Leather/Levi social club. At a time when being openly gay and leather-identified carried real risk, the Atons created a space where leathermen could gather in fellowship, live their kink with pride, and celebrate their identity. From our earliest years, we were active in the Mid-America Conference of Clubs (MACC), forging ties with clubs across the region. Our first Run was held in 1972, followed by our first Gopher Run in 1976, beginning a bi-annual tradition that continues to this day.

From the start, leather was not just attire but a symbol of brotherhood, erotic power, and chosen family. The Atons hosted parties, bar nights, and fundraisers that brought leatherfolk together, while early motorcycle “runs” evolved into large camping weekends that strengthened bonds across the national leather community. These gatherings remain a hallmark of our identity—weekends of fellowship, education, play, and hospitality.

Over the decades, the Atons have become part of the fabric of both Twin Cities LGBTQ+ and leather history. Members have carried leather pride forward through our participation and leadership in Minnesota Leather Pride, supported HIV/AIDS services, raised money for unhoused youth and other local nonprofits, and sponsored both members and community contestants in leather contests such as International Mr. Leather. We have also carried the club’s colors to runs, contests, and leather events nationwide. Our traditions—such as the pledge program, teaching leather care, and hosting with a spirit of hospitality—connect today’s members with generations of leathermen and leatherfolk before them.

Today, the Atons remain one of the oldest continuously operating leather/levi clubs in the United States. We proudly welcome members of all gender identities and sexual orientations, with a current roster of Full Members, Associates, Retired Members, and Honorary Members. Since our founding, more than 368 individuals have worn the Atons patch. Many of our alumni remain active, ensuring that the bonds of friendship and service endure. Through five decades of change, the Atons remain steadfast: a club that celebrates leather culture, fosters deep friendships, and preserves our shared history while making space for the future.
